How Great Thou Art? Religion, Unity, And Healing, Rev. Vonshelle Beneby.

Reverand Vonshelle Beneby is ordained by the United Church of Christ.

Vonshelle has served as a hospice chaplain, Bereavement Manager and Coordinator, and community educator in the Daytona Beach, Florida, area. Her hospice work involved providing pastoral end-of-life care, assessing and evaluating bereavement needs and services, conducting community education, and facilitating Grief, Loss, and Caregiver support groups.

Religion tends to determine who and what is considered worthy of love, kindness, and accepting grace, which has led to prolonged emotional and religious harm. These issues can restrict our understanding of and ability to live a life of joy, hope, and peace. During this talk, she will explore the harm caused by religion, its unwelcoming presence, religious freedom, and the possibility of healing. She will discuss ways of feeling safe to be our authentic selves, just as we are, and will become, as we have a relationship with God/Creator/Universe.

Prior to hospice care, she served as the Logistics Coordinator and Assistant to the President of Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida. She has over 15 years of experience as a counselor and program director in Florida. Her work settings have varied from law enforcement to director of a treatment program for women and their substance-exposed newborns, a juvenile assessment center, and a juvenile day treatment program. Managing agencies, providing pastoral care to hospice patients and their families, and being involved in the community and church have all been invaluable.

These career experiences and her involvement in serving and educating others have created her desire to help individuals and communities live lives of joy and peace by achieving restorative wholeness: mind, Body, and Spirit.

Vonshelle’s publications include contributing to Orange County Public Schools’ resource guide and an international book of daily meditations. She is also a content expert reviewer for LGBTQ-inclusive hospice and palliative care guides for professionals.
