Hidden Shame Dynamics
Recognizing When We Ask Other People
to Carry the Emotions We Do Not Want to Feel
Hidden Shame Dynamics is a self-paced mini-course that will help you recognize the emotions beneath blame, control, defensiveness, criticism, and withdrawal.
Not so you can judge or eliminate these parts of yourself—but so you can understand them, hold what belongs to you, and choose what comes next.
Awareness creates choice.
Choice creates freedom.
Shame does not always look like shame.
Sometimes it appears as blame, criticism, control, withdrawal, defensiveness, perfectionism, or an unexpectedly strong reaction to something small.
When an emotion feels too painful or threatening for us to hold, we may unconsciously create a situation in which someone else carries it for us.
For example:
A parent may be unable to afford an experience for their child.
Rather than feeling the grief, shame, or helplessness of not being able to provide it, they may focus on a minor behavior and tell the child they cannot participate because they were “bad.”
As a result, the parent no longer has to sit with the feeling of not being able to provide.
But now the child carries the disappointment—and the belief that the loss was their fault.
This is a hidden shame dynamic.
These patterns are not always intentional or malicious. They are often protective responses formed when we did not have the safety, support, or capacity to feel something difficult.
Inside This Self-Paced Mini Course
Together, we will explore:
What hidden shame dynamics are.
How shame disguises itself as other emotions and behaviors.
Why we may unconsciously ask another person to carry what we cannot feel.
How blame, criticism, control, withdrawal, and defensiveness can protect us from shame.
The difference between someone’s behavior and the emotion it activates within us.
How these dynamics can appear in parenting, partnerships, families, friendships, and work.
How to recognize when a reaction is larger than the present moment.
How to pause before transferring an emotion to someone else.
How to take compassionate responsibility for what belongs to us.
How to respond with greater honesty, awareness, and choice.
This course is not about shaming yourself for having shame.
It is not about judging the ways you learned to protect yourself.
It is an invitation to notice these patterns with compassion, understand what they have been protecting, and begin making a different choice.
This Course May Be for You If:
You sometimes react strongly and later wonder why.
You notice yourself blaming others when you feel uncomfortable.
You struggle to admit when you feel powerless, inadequate, disappointed, or afraid.
You learned to hide vulnerability or difficult emotions.
You want to understand recurring patterns within your relationships.
You want to communicate more honestly without making another person responsible for your feelings.
You are ready to meet shame with curiosity rather than judgment.
What Becomes Possible:
→ When we can recognize and hold our own emotions, we no longer need someone else to carry them for us.
→ We can name what is true.
→ We can take responsibility without collapsing into self-blame.
→ We can repair relationships without abandoning ourselves.
→ And we can meet the parts of us that feel ashamed with compassion instead of creating more shame.
What might change in your relationships if you could recognize the emotion beneath the reaction—and allow it to belong to you without letting it define you?
Freedom begins when we can see what has been making our choices for us. Hidden Shame Dynamics is a self-paced mini-course about recognizing the emotions beneath our reactions—not to escape shame, but to create greater freedom within ourselves and our relationships.
Hidden Shame Dynamics is a self-paced mini-course you can move through in your own time.
