Healing is an interesting thing. It isn’t linear and it isn’t easy, but it is always worth it. The process of healing and growing is impressive. It can be impressively painful and also impressively rewarding. For me, the more I healed, the more I enjoyed the process of healing. I can remember the moment it hit me, I liked healing. I didn’t just like the end result but I liked the process, the journey, the moments of discomfort and growth. I liked it all, not just the end result.
Healing reminds me much of marathon running. Everyone likes the end of the marathon but can you enjoy the 26.1 that came before that last .1? Can you enjoy the training runs when it is just you, out on the road alone and working hard. Can you enjoy that every run will be different, your body will respond differently from day to day and sometimes it won’t perform well at all. Can you enjoy the soreness in your muscles (DOMS) when you have pushed yourself. Can you enjoy it?
Healing is also like marathon running from another standpoint. I hear people say “she healed me” or “he healed me”. It has always made me shake my head. How could someone heal you? How is that possible? That is like saying “she ran the marathon for me” or “he ran the marathon for me” when the person really just gave you the tools and education to support your own training and running. For example, if you have a running coach and they provide education and push you and support you and tweak your practice and technique for a better outcome. At the end of the race, would you say that the coach ran the race for you? No, I would think not. I would think that you would say your coach helped support you and gave you the tools and tips that you needed for a better outcome, but that you did the running and that you ran the race. So, wouldn’t it be ridiculous to hear your coach claim that he or she ran the race for you? Now, turn and apply that to someone who supports your healing process. You do the healing, they support you.
Heal on friends, and take the credit for the work you are doing, stand in that power!
